Discovery on Ćelijsko brdo: new archaeological findings

Traces of an ancient watchtower above Ćelije monastery

On the steep cliffs above the Gradac river, at Ćelijsko brdo, archaeologists have discovered the remains of a fortification. It is believed to be a military watchtower from the 3rd or 4th century. They served as a strategic point for monitoring and protecting trade routes in this part of Serbia.

Years of research unveil valuable finds

This site was first noticed about a decade ago when researchers from the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments analyzed the remains of the medieval fortress Jerinin Grad. At that time, traces of an ancient tower were spotted on the cliffs of Ćelijsko brdo. That prompted further research, which began in 2019 as part of a project dedicated to the medieval history of the Valjevo region.

During the initial excavations, archaeologists uncovered a rectangular structure measuring 12 x 9 meters, built of roughly cut stone. Further investigations confirmed the existence of a water cistern, supporting the site’s military function. The excavation was funded by the Ministry of culture and the City of Valjevo and additional research and conservation of the walls are planned for this year.

Pathways of the past – An ancient road and a network of fortifications

One of the most significant findings near Ćelijsko brdo is the remains of an ancient road that once connected the Valjevo and Požega basins via Povlen mountain. It is believed that smaller fortifications, such as the watchtower at Taor, were built to ensure control over travelers and transported goods.

Along the road, which historically led toward Užice and Čačak, archaeologists have discovered traces of several such structures. However, no preserved historical maps or written records confirm their existence. The findings suggest that this network of fortifications played a crucial role in protecting the corridor.

Tourism potential and future research

Beyond its archaeological significance, the site at Ćelijsko brdo has the potential to become an important part of Valjevo’s tourist offerings. Plans include installing signposts and informational panels to educate visitors about the historical importance of the location.

Future research will focus on analyzing ancient roads in this region, and upcoming expeditions are expected to uncover more unknown fortifications along this route. The discovery of the watchtower on Ćelijsko brdo is just part of a larger story about Serbia’s ancient heritage.
