Golubac fortress has new working hours

Discover the rich history and legends of this medieval town on the banks of the Danube

Golubac fortress, located at the entrance to the Iron Gates Gorge, has adjusted its working hours for visitors. During March, the fortress is open for tours from 10 AM to 3 PM, while starting from April 1st, the working hours will be extended until 4 PM. The fortress is closed on Mondays.

History and legends of Golubac fortress

Built on the steep Ridan rock, Golubac fortress was first mentioned in 1335. The exact builder remains unknown. Although it is believed to have been constructed either by king Dragutin Nemanjić in the 13th century or by the Hungarians in the 14th century. The fortress consists of nine massive towers and a palace built by despot Stefan Lazarević. Due to its strategic importance, the fortress was a target of many conquests over the centuries but was never taken by military force.

“Hat Tower”

The name of the fortress is linked to several legends. One of the most famous tells the story of Byzantine princess Jelena, who was imprisoned in the highest tower, known as the “Hat Tower”. In her solitude, she fed pigeons that served as her messengers. Another legend speaks of a beautiful girl named Golubana, who refused the love of a Turkish sultan and was punished by being tied to a rock in the middle of the Danube, known as “Baba-kay”. These stories add to the fortress’s mystique and charm.

Visiting Golubac fortress

Until April 1st, the black zone of the fortress will be inaccessible due to ongoing work on the path. However, the blue zone, which was closed in early November, has now reopened to visitors. This trail is of medium difficulty and requires a higher level of physical fitness. In addition to the blue zone, the fortress also offers green, red, and black zones, while the fifth zone remains inaccessible.

Ticket prices

Ticket prices for Golubac fortress have remained unchanged since the beginning of 2024. Entry to the green zone costs 750 dinars for adults, 200 dinars for children aged 12 to 18, while children under 12, accompanied by an adult, can enter for free. Pensioners can visit the fortress for 450 dinars.
