Lake Prespa a tranquil oasis at the Balkan three borders

Geographical location and characteristics of the lake

Lake Prespa consists of two interconnected lakes: Great Prespa Lake and Small Prespa Lake. Great Prespa Lake covers an area of approximately 259 km², while Small Prespa Lake is smaller, with an area of around 46.8 km². The largest portion of Great Prespa Lake belongs to North Macedonia. The remaining parts are divided between Greece and Albania. These lakes are the highest tectonic lakes in the Balkans, situated at an altitude of 853 meters above sea level.

The area around Lake Prespa is known for its exceptional natural beauty. Surrounded by mountains such as Galičica and Baba. The region offers numerous sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters, ideal for swimming during the summer months.

The lake is home to a diverse range of plant and animal life. That includes rare bird species such as pelicans and cormorants. Of particular significance is Golem Grad, the only island in North Macedonia, which serves as a natural reserve for many endemic species.
