Turkish Tourism at a Crossroads

Rising costs and declining visitor satisfaction raise concerns about the stability of a sector long seen as a pillar of the economy

For years, Turkey has been considered one of the most desirable and affordable summer destinations, but tourism 2025 brings challenges. With increasing prices and waning tourist interest, questions arise as to whether Turkey can maintain its image as an accessible and competitive travel option.

Rising Costs Shift the Market Landscape

In recent months, accommodation and service prices have climbed significantly, especially affecting foreign visitors. Vacation packages that were once budget-friendly now rival the cost of luxury destinations like Dubai. A family trip to popular resorts can now exceed 150,000 Turkish lira. By comparison, similar trips to Greece or Egypt are notably cheaper. Even with discounts offered to foreign tourists, overall costs remain high, diminishing Turkey’s appeal as a low-cost destination.

Fewer Arrivals in Key Months

While last year broke records in tourist arrivals, early 2025 statistics signal caution. A drop in May arrivals, and an overall slight decrease compared to the same period in 2024, suggest the sector is entering an uncertain phase. Particularly worrying are the declines from core markets such as Russia, Germany, and Bulgaria, with a noticeable dip in arrivals from the UK as well.

Service and Reputation Issues

Beyond price, more tourists are voicing dissatisfaction with service quality and the changing entertainment scene. Excessive costs for simple meals—like lahmacun and coffee—at major resorts are drawing criticism. Comparisons with Dubai’s extravagant pricing are becoming more frequent. Guests are also noting a decline in content quality and limited entertainment variety, which undermines Turkey’s image as a dynamic and engaging destination.

Some industry observers fear that Turkey is losing touch with the expectations of the average tourist and is shifting toward an elitist model, at the expense of the traditional appeal that once made it popular.

Cautious Outlook for the 2025 Season

Turkey is expected to host around 65 million tourists during the peak summer months and generate $64 billion in tourism revenue, with an average tourist spending $1,000. However, meeting these targets will increasingly depend on the sector’s ability to respond to evolving challenges.
