Balkan Cities Among the Happiest in the World

According to the 2025 Global List by the London Institute for Quality of Life, Ljubljana, Maribor, Pula, and Podgorica stand out for their quality of life

In the latest report by the London Institute for Quality of Life, which annually ranks cities based on happiness and living standards, several cities from the Balkan region have secured their place. While urban centers like Copenhagen, Zurich, and Singapore continue to dominate the list, four cities from the region, along with Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, have also made it into the top 200.

Ljubljana – A Pioneer in Urban Sustainability

The Slovenian capital, Ljubljana, ranked 41st, making it one of the leading cities in Central Europe in terms of happiness indicators. Known for its green policies and clearly defined strategy for environmental sustainability, Ljubljana was the first city in Europe to commit to a zero-waste goal, continuously building its image as a modern and responsible metropolis.

Maribor – Close to Nature, Safe and Serene

Slovenia’s second-largest city, Maribor, took 104th place. Nestled at the foothills of the Alps and situated along the Drava River, Maribor is described as a peaceful urban area that strikes a balance between natural surroundings and city life. Locals highlight safety, low unemployment, and a pleasant atmosphere as the main factors behind their satisfaction.

Podgorica – Simplicity as a Strength

Montenegro’s capital, Podgorica, landed at 191st place but showed strength in several areas. Despite ongoing urban development challenges and a lack of a cohesive visual identity, the city is praised for the accessibility of essential services, efficient public transport, and a low crime rate. Residents particularly appreciate the calm lifestyle and the ease of handling daily tasks. The city received its highest rating for governance, indicating a well-organized administration focused on citizens’ needs.
