Greece More Accessible: Lower Ferry Fares Starting May 1

The Greek government is introducing a reduction in port fees for domestic ferry lines, opening the door to more affordable holidays for both local and international tourists.

Half the Fees, Double the Opportunities

A newly adopted amendment by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Island Policy stipulates a 50% reduction in fees for all domestic passenger ferries for a one-year period. The decision does not apply to cruise ships, but strictly to ferries connecting the Greek mainland with the islands. This means that popular destinations like Crete, Mykonos, Santorini, or Rhodes will now be easier on travelers’ wallets.

Speaking at the Delphi Economic Forum, Minister Vasilis Kikilias emphasized that the main goal of this measure is to preserve the accessibility of travel and maintain a balance between economic viability and social inclusiveness.

Traveling to the islands should not be a luxury reserved for the wealthy – it must remain an option for everyone, the minister stated.

According to Kikilias, this decision is a direct response to the anticipated rise in ferry ticket prices. It is also part of a broader government strategy to support tourism and island communities that depend on seasonal income.
