Petrolamium crnojevicii – hidden treasure of Montenegro’s karst

A unique plant discovered in the Štitar region near Cetinje could become a symbol of Montenegro’s flora

A previously unknown plant species, Petrolamium crnojevicii, has been discovered in the Štitar region near Cetinje. This remarkable species represents a significant contribution to the botanical community, placing Montenegro on the world map as the homeland of a rare and endemic genus.

First encounter with the unknown plant

The discovery is the result of years of scientific research, with the story beginning in 2019. That year, biologist Snežana Dragićević from the CANU Eco Center and curator of the Natural History Museum of Montenegro, Snežana Vuksanović, along with Marko Karaman, were studying the biodiversity of the karst region. During the expedition, their attention was drawn to a small green tuft on rocky terrain, whose appearance did not match any known species.

Scientific confirmation and significance of the discovery

Years of research and subcellular analysis confirmed the uniqueness of this plant, with final genetic testing conducted in prestigious laboratories in China. Based on these findings, the plant was officially named Petrolamium crnojevicii, in honor of Ivan Crnojević. He was a historical ruler who defended Montenegro’s capital from Soko Grad.

This discovery not only enriches Montenegro’s flora but also highlights the importance of preserving the natural habitats of rare species. Since it grows in a limited area, it has been classified as critically endangered according to the criteria of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Threat of extinction and call for protection

Although its discovery has sparked scientific excitement, it has also raised concerns about the preservation of its natural habitat. Deforestation and ecosystem degradation pose a serious risk to this plant. Experts emphasize the urgent need for conservation measures to prevent its possible extinction.

The discovery of Petrolamium crnojevicii is a true botanical sensation, reminding us of the importance of biodiversity conservation. With this newfound knowledge, Montenegro not only gains a new symbol of its national flora but also has the opportunity to set an example of responsible environmental stewardship.
