The Largest Restoration of the Iconic Hagia Sophia Has Begun

One of the most significant cultural monuments, Hagia Sophia, is undergoing the most comprehensive restoration process in its long history. Special attention is being given to the monumental dome, which is currently the focus of meticulous reinforcement and protection efforts, with an emphasis on increasing its resistance to seismic influences. The goal is to strengthen the structure further while preserving its authentic appearance that has withstood the test of time.

Dome at the Center of Modern Restoration

In line with contemporary conservation approaches, all interventions are being carried out from the exterior to avoid damaging the mosaics inside, which are of inestimable artistic and historical value. The dome’s lead coverings are being carefully removed. All damaged sections will be restored or replaced using original techniques and materials.

Technological Precision with Traditional Respect

During the restoration process, the dome is protected by a steel structure and a specialized tarpaulin resistant to external elements. At the same time, the building’s interior is undergoing careful conservation of the mosaics, preserved in controlled conditions. Inside Hagia Sophia, a 43.5-meter-high platform supported by four massive pillars will be erected. It allows restoration work to proceed without interrupting religious ceremonies.

A special tower crane has been deployed for the exterior work, standing 41 meters tall with a horizontal arm extending 60 meters. Its design is adapted to the complexity of the structure, enabling safe maneuvering near the building without endangering the walls or minarets. Upon completion of the work, all auxiliary elements will be removed, restoring the complex to its original state.

Preserving Heritage Through Innovation

This phase of the renovation is part of a broader program that includes previously completed reconstructions of important parts of the complex. These include the tombs of Sultans Mehmed III, Selim II, and Murad III, as well as educational and astronomical facilities from the Ottoman period. The upper level of Hagia Sophia, known as the gallery floor, has been cleaned and reopened to the public after a long period of closure.

As part of the heritage digitalization initiative, the entire building has been precisely scanned and documented, resulting in the creation of its digital twin. This virtual replica offers insight into every detail of the interior and exterior. It provides an additional layer of preservation for future generations.

A Multi-Layered History of an Architectural Masterpiece

Originally built as a Christian church in the 6th century, Hagia Sophia has played a key role in the religious and political life of Constantinople for centuries. During the Ottoman rule, Sultan Mehmed II converted it into a mosque, introducing new decorative and architectural elements. Among these were golden Islamic ornaments that covered earlier Christian imagery.

One of the key figures in preserving its structural stability was Mimar Sinan, who designed the two western minarets and carried out crucial work to strengthen the foundations and walls. His interventions allowed Hagia Sophia to survive many devastating earthquakes that struck Istanbul over the centuries.

A Future Rooted in Respect for the Past

As part of UNESCO’s World Heritage since 1985, Hagia Sophia today functions as the Grand Mosque. It also stands as a witness to layered history and the interweaving of civilizations. The ongoing restoration efforts aim to preserve its monumental significance. And not only as a religious site but also as a historical monument.
