Berat: The city of a thousand windows

From ancient times to the UNESCO List

Located in southern Albania, Berat stands out for its rich history and exceptionally well-preserved Ottoman architecture. Its unique blend of culture, art, and architectural styles places it among the most beautiful cities in the Balkans.

Historical significance and cultural heritage

Throughout the centuries, Berat has held strategic importance, contributing to its diverse cultural heritage. As early as the 6th century before Christ, the Greek tribe Desareti inhabited this region. Later on the Romans and Byzantines, who left their mark. However, the most crucial moment in the city’s development occurred in 1450 when the Ottomans conquered it and transformed it into a major administrative center.

Today, Berat is renowned for its medieval fortress dominating the city’s skyline and numerous religious sites—including 40 Byzantine churches and 30 mosques. Due to its architectural and historical value, Berat was declared Albania’s museum city in 1961. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008, along with Gjirokastër.

Berat boasts an authentic appearance that earned it the nickname “the city of a thousand windows.” The stone houses were built in the Ottoman style. They feature numerous windows that line the hilly terrain in perfect harmony, creating a mesmerizing visual effect. This distinctive look is best experienced in the old neighborhoods—Gorica, Mangalem, and Kala.
