THE LEGEND OF A FAIRY TALE BIGAR

On the slopes of Anina, about thirty kilometers from the border with Serbia, is the most beautiful waterfall in Romania, Bigar. It was formed by the flow of groundwater into the Minis River. It was declared a protected natural asset, and gained its fame in 2013 when it was recognized by The World Geography as one of the eight unique waterfalls in the world. It is accompanied by numerous interesting things, among which is that it is located exactly in the middle between the equator and the North Pole.

According to the legend that accompanies him, there was a couple who could not have children. They asked for advice from an old woman, who advised them that a woman should drink water from a spring, but under condition that, if a girl is born to them, she will not be allowed to fall in love. After they became parents, in order to prevent love between their daughter and the young man Bigar, they locked her in a cave near the spring. When the young man set off in search of his sweetheart, he drowned in the river of her tears. When the girl heard that, her hair turned to moss, tears to waterfalls, and her heart froze with pain. As part of their love, the locals called the place Bigar.

Today, the waterfall is under the protection of the state and the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
