Hvar introduces new noise restrictions

What will this mean for tourists and hospitality businesses?

Hvar Island, one of Croatia’s most famous nightlife destinations, is implementing stricter measures to reduce the negative impact of parties on the local community and visitors. As part of this initiative, the city of Hvar has decided to introduce noise level restrictions during the summer season. This will significantly affect nightclubs, bars, and outdoor restaurants.

A decision that will change tourism on Hvar

Last week, the Hvar city council voted in favor of a regulation that limits the noise level to 85 decibels during the summer months. This noise level corresponds to a typical restaurant. It poses a serious challenge, especially for hospitality businesses that traditionally attract tourists seeking nightlife and parties.

Popular clubs and open-air bars will now have to adjust their activities to comply with the new regulations. This decision is part of a broader strategy by the city of Hvar.  It is trying distance itself from mass tourism focused on entertainment, positioning itself as a destination suited for families and those seeking a more peaceful holiday.

Negative reactions from hospitality providers

The newly introduced changes have not been without opposition. Especially among hospitality providers who have expressed dissatisfaction with the reduced allowed noise levels. Many bar, restaurant, and club managers lobbied for a relaxation of the regulations. Some even proposed declaring the entire island a year-round entertainment zone.

However, local authorities have remained firm in their decision, wanting to send a clear message about the direction in which Hvar is developing. The new measures are expected to reduce the negative impact of excessive noise on the local community and contribute to sustainable tourism.

Fines for inappropriate behavior

The new regulations on Hvar are part of a broader initiative supported by other destinations in Croatia. In cities like Split and Dubrovnik, tourists who behave inappropriately can be fined. If they are consuming alcohol in public spaces, urinating in the streets, or walking without clothes,  could be fined up to 700 euros on the spot.

For more serious offenses, such as drunken arguments, verbal assaults, or fights, fines can reach up to 4,000 euros. These changes clearly indicate Croatia’s increasing focus on quality tourism that contributes to the well-being of local communities, not just the profitability of the tourism sector.

Ecological and social consequences of new measures

In addition to noise restrictions, Croatia is also working to protect its nature and ecosystem. The removal of the noble pen shell. This is an endangered specie crucial for maintaining balance in the Mediterranean waters and it’s removal is fined at 67 euros per specimen. This step highlights the country’s efforts to preserve its natural heritage and set standards for responsible behavior. And that is an important part of the broader strategy for sustainable tourism.
