Greece Speeds Up Border Crossing Process

Upgrades at the Evzoni Border in Two Phases — More Officers and Expanded Facilities Promise Shorter Waiting Times for Serbian Tourists

Evzoni, the busiest border crossing for travelers from Serbia heading to Greece, is about to undergo significant improvements. The Greek government has initiated a modernization process for this key entry point in order to ease traffic congestion during the summer peak and to offer tourists a more comfortable and faster entry into the country.

Two Phases for Better Flow

According to available information, the modernization of Evzoni will take place in two essential phases. The first involves increasing the number of border and customs officers. This measure aims to reduce waiting times, especially during the high-traffic months of the tourist season.

The second phase includes physical upgrades to the infrastructure. Plans involve reconstruction of existing facilities, expansion of the crossing’s capacity, and the addition of new vehicle lanes and passport/customs checkpoints. All works are expected to be completed by the start of the 2025 summer season, significantly improving the crossing’s efficiency.

Figures That Prove the Need

In 2024 alone, around five million travelers passed through Evzoni, while the first four months of 2025 already saw an additional one million crossings. These numbers clearly highlight why modernizing this border point has become a priority for both Greek and Serbian authorities.

New Schengen Rules Reshape Routes

For travelers looking to avoid potential delays during construction, alternative routes through Bulgaria are recommended. As of January 2025, Bulgaria and Romania have officially joined the Schengen Area, resulting in the removal of internal land border checks with other Schengen members. This means travelers from Serbia passing through Bulgaria now only undergo passport control at the Serbian-Bulgarian border. Entry from Bulgaria into Greece is now seamless, making this an attractive alternative for a quicker journey to the Greek coast.

Relief for Millions of Tourists

The investment in Evzoni is not only infrastructural — it’s also strategic. A faster border crossing brings more than convenience — it improves safety, eases local traffic flow, and enhances the overall experience for travelers. Through these efforts, Greece sends a clear message to regional tourists: your time matters to us.
